PARADE WINNERS
2019 James P. Eakins Memorial Award
Congratulations Ronnie Nelson Baked Batata Productions
The history of this prestigious award is a noteworthy memorial to our parade founder, Jim Eakins. The story starts on March 17th, 1961 with Jim and two friends, Poki Marenzino and Red Fenwick marching around the block with an Irish Flag from Sullivan’s Bar in Denver. Among his many accolades, Jim served our nation as a naval officer, served as past commander of the American Legion, was the Director of the Interstate Compact and had a long career in Probation and Parole for the State of Colorado. He developed solid friendships over the years in the military and in the local, state and federal government. At the urging of Poki and Red, he optimized his professional connections and organized the first parade committee and was named Parade Chairman. The first parade marched on March 17th, 1962 and was a delight to the audience and was recognized by the city as the beginning of a great tradition in Denver. We honor Jim Eakins memory by awarding the Best of Parade Award to Baked Batata Productions.
